Freetel actively pursues opportunities for investment as part of building a proprietary portfolio of assets. Freetel has a sector neutral approach but looks for businesses with strong growth prospects that provide the scope for a significant equity interest plus participation in the strategic direction of the business under the terms of the shareholders' agreement or via a management contract between Freetel and the investee company. Presently, Freetel has four subsidiary entities:
Freetel Telecommunications is an ICT investment company in which Freetel has 80.0% shareholding; Tech Basadi Women, a broad-based 100.0% women-owned investment company, owns 15.0% shareholding and the Bankuna High School Trust owns 5.0% shareholding. Bankuna High School is located in a rural area in Limpopo Province; despite its humble roots, the school boasts an illustrious alumnus that includes Mr. Tito Mboweni (Governor of the Reserve Bank of South Africa) and Dr. Reul Khoza (Chairman of Nedbank).
In April 2008, Freetel Telecommunications acquired 30.0% shareholding in Saab Grintek Technologies (Pty) Ltd ("SGT"), with a five-year option to acquire a majority interest in SGT. Saab South Africa, a subsidiary of Saab AB of Sweden, owns 70.0% of SGT. SGT is a R 1 billion company and the largest independent supplier of integrated telecommunications products and services to Telkom South Africa. SGT is also a major supplier to Telkom Namibia, Vodacom and MTN in South Africa and the rest of the Africa.
Freetel Industrial & Minerals is the industrial and minerals investment arm of the Freetel Group.
Freetel Property Management looks for both property management and development investment opportunities in the South African market, with a particular focus on provinces of Gauteng, Limpopo and North West.
The fund management arm of the business, Freetel Fund Management (Pty) Ltd, is the majority shareholder of the Gauteng Fund Management Company (Pty) Ltd ("GFMC"). The GFMC is the fund manager for the Gauteng Fund ("GF"). The GF is a R 7.5 billion fund focused on infrastructure investments in the Gauteng Province. Gauteng Province has the largest population in South Africa with 9.5 million and Africa's largest economic hub, contributing almost 40.0% of South Africa's Gross Domestic Product.
